Do we really need more than three cameras on phones?

The number of camera phones is increasing day by day. The year 2018 was the starting point for launching phones with three cameras. First, Huawei created such a trend and Then LG joined the field with the V40.

Meanwhile, Samsung is the only company that thinks three cameras are not enough, and the company launched the world’s first smartphone with the Galaxy A9 2018. Of course, this handset is not considered a part of Samsung’s flagship, but the idea that the four cameras can be placed on a single phone came first with this handset.

But what are the dual cameras?

Dual cameras are generally divided into five types. Usually, as the second camera, there is sometimes a camera to measure the depth of field, a camera for doubling zoom, a wide-angle camera, the black and white camera for recording more detail or a camera focused on night photography.

Telephoto cameras, wide angle, black and white or the second camera for night photography can also be used as a depth-of-field camera. On the other hand, on cheaper devices, we only see a simple and two-megapixel camera, whose sole purpose is to measure the depth of the field, but in flagships, the second camera will have a different task in addition to measuring the depth of the field.

By adding a second camera to the phone, it’s definitely more affordable than a single camera. But the choice of this second camera is one of the hardest things for companies.

Users may want to upload ultra-wide images. Others may be interested in zooming in on images and even prefer some cameras for better night-time photography. Under these circumstances, companies must only choose a bunch of users and choose their own camera phone. It is therefore always found that users who consider the existence of a second camera unnecessary because they do not fit their needs.

What if we add another camera?

Three-dimensional cameras bring more flexibility to users. Instead of just having a telephoto camera or wide-angle camera, they can have both cameras on their phone. This means users have access to two other lenses for their camera in addition to the normal-angle camera, which is a great option.

Huawei P20 Pro was the first phone to have three cameras in its back. It has a 40-megapixel sensor as the main camera, an eight-megapixel camera with a three-dimensional zoom for the second camera and a 20-megapixel black and white camera. The combination of this hardware and software on the P20’s Peru phone allows users to capture superb photos in the dark and, in terms of zoom, this is still one of the best in the market.

The ability of four cameras

Samsung thinks users will need another camera behind the phone, thus putting four cameras in the back of the Galaxy A9 2018. The three cameras come with the same system as the LG cameras and use a standard lens, trapezoid and widescreen lens. In addition, Samsung has a 5-megapixel camera in the system, which is only measuring a depth of field.

The four-camera system in the Galaxy A9 is not the only way to use four cameras. It may soon be that another company will use the same combination, with the difference that the 5-megapixel camera will measure the depth of field with a black and white sensor or more zoom telephoto camera. You can even use a special night camera instead of a depth-of-field camera and create a very good four-camera system.

In general, can four cameras have more value than three cameras? It’s a little too early to judge.
